What are the different types of pool cues?

snooker and pool table

There are many pool cues to choose from. There is an English pool cue, an American pool cue, a snooker cue, and a jump cue. These types all have their own unique characteristics. You'll be better prepared to make the best decision for yourself if you learn more about them.

American pool cues

There are many differences in American pool cues from English cues. American cues are split almost always in the middle, while English cues might split at the 3/4 mark. In English pool and snooker, the 3/4 joint is more popular. This style of cue allows for a player to balance the weight backwards more than with a traditional cue. You should experiment with different types of cues to decide which one you like the best.

English pool cues

An English pool cuff is best for intermediate and beginner players. These cues are typically thinner than other styles, and can measure between eight and nine millimeters in width at the tip. These cues often include a brass ferrule for strength and durability. They are also made out of ashwood which has a unique texture.

Snooker cues

There are many wood options for making snooker cues. Some are made of Ash while others are made from maple. The tip can be seven to eleven millimeters in length, and the overall length can range from sixteen to eighteen inches. Snooker cues weigh between sixteen and nineteen ounces, with 3/4th joints. A ferrule can be used to make snooker cues from steel, titanium, and fiber.

Jump cues

A jump cue is a type of pool cue with a hard tip, which helps the player transfer more power to the cue ball. Jump cues can be of many different kinds, and you will have better jump shots if you choose the right one. Before you buy a jump cue, consider its pros and cons.

Squirt

A squirt happens when the cue ball strikes off-center. The deflection causes the ball to travel in an opposite direction. The deflection can be caused by physics, but it could also be caused by a variety of factors. For example, an off-center hit will cause the tip of the cue ball to make contact with an angled surface, so the more off-center the hit, the greater the deflection.

Dimensions of tip

The tip size on an English poolcue can be adjusted to suit the type of game. A cue tip measures approximately 9.5mm in size. The tip of an American pool cue is approximately 9.5mm larger than that of an English one, making it much easier to hit the cue ball. However, they are more difficult to aim than the best cues for Snooker.

Common parts in an English pool cue

English pool cues are usually made of Ash wood, with a brass ferrule for strength and a coarse leather tip for grip. These cues are the shortest of all pool cues. They measure approximately 57 inches in length and have a tip measuring 8 to 9 millimeters. Ash is a tough wood that doesn't show its grain pattern. English cues have a greater flexibility than American counterparts which makes them less susceptible to warping.

English pool cues are expensive

A quality English pool cue will cost you between PS30-PS300 depending on the material. A high-quality cue will last for many years. The performance of an English pool cue depends on many factors, such as its tip size and shape.
