Brunswick made its first billiard table for a Cincinnati meatpacker. Word of Mouth promotion quickly brought more customers to Brunswick's tables. Brunswick purchased competitors in the 1870s. This would make Brunswick the leader of the billiards industry. Brunswick reported sales in 1960 of $422,000,000 Brunswick began to expand into other products in the early 1900s. These included refrigerators and toilet seats. In the early 1900s, Brunswick also began manufacturing automobile tires. Brunswick bought Mercury Marine in 1960 and began providing camouflage nets during the Gulf War to the military.

John Moses Brunswick immigrated from Switzerland to the United States in the mid-19th-century. He was an apprentice in Philadelphia and New York City. He was soon elected as a member of the Ohio legislature. The Cincinnati Carriage Making Company was established in 1865. He later joined forces with Julius Balke, who owned a billiard table factory in Cincinnati. Balke opened a St. Louis branch in 1854 and later he established another in Chicago.


Brunswick has also been a military contractor, and its products were used during two world wars. In 1961, Brunswick acquired Mercury Marine, a company that manufactures boats and radomes for Patriot missiles. Brunswick grew its product line in the 1900s to include toilet seat, refrigerators, phonographs, etc.
