The official snooker ranking system ranks players based upon their recent performance. It is administered and maintained by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. This listing is updated following each event in the ranking series. In order to be eligible to play on the World Snooker Tour, a player must have a current snooker world ranking. Players are seeded according to their performance in specific tournaments and their ranking.
The first two years of the snooker ranking were based on three World Championships results: the World Open Championship, UK Championship Championship, and Professional Players Tournament. Each of these events awarded one seed to the winner and two to the runner ups. From 1976 through 1982, the World Championship was a ranking event. The International Open in 1982 became the fourth ranking tourney. As competition grew, so did the number of tournaments.
The World Championship knockout format was also reintroduced during this period. This is considered the beginning of modern snooker. Today, most records are based on the period starting from 1969. The current snooker World Ranking List has 31 titles.
