Badminton rules differ from match to match. Badminton World Federation rules (BWF), outline the basics of the sport. They define skills and shots, as well. There are many rules that govern the service of the shuttlecock. To win a badminton game, you must be familiar with these rules.
A service is the most critical shot in a badminton match. This is a shot which can only be taken once and will give the receiver one point. Official BWF play gives the receiver this right by winning an official rally.
You need to be familiar with the service rules for each type of game. Most importantly, you can't serve overhead or touch it with your body. You can only serve diagonally across the net. Another rule is that you cannot hit the shuttlecock twice in a row.
According to the BWF, you must not serve in an improper way. If the score of your match is even, you can serve on the right side, and vice versa if it isn't. You cannot serve from any court outside of the white borders.

The ability to serve a birdie, while impressive in skill, is the most important shot of a match. However, you will not have the chance to hit it if it is caught in the net.
A birdie (or shuttlecock) is a half-round ball with featherlike material on its bottom. It is only allowed to be hit once before bouncing to the other side. Additionally, it is only permitted to be hit on the lower birdie side. If it bounces back, it will return down.
A few other important service rules are worth knowing. One of these is that shuttlecocks should land on the service line. This is the same for doubles. Additionally, you will receive a point if you manage to make a serve in the right court.
Similarly, there are badminton rules to help you figure out if a particular shot is a good idea or not. Some of these include using the right racket, making use of a racquet that is not too heavy, and the fact that you must be above the waistline when you try to serve.
Those are just a few of the more than 30 different badminton rules that you must keep in mind while playing. If you don't, your opponent could win by a wide margin.

Badminton's most important rule states that you can only hit the net once to lift the shuttle. You can also receive a point for touching the net.
Another rule is to not hit the shuttlecock twice in a row. A birdie should have an ideal base. Although you don't have to be perfect at returning a serving, it is a good start.
