In the final, he will face Joshua Filler, the World Pool and Billiards Association 9 ball champion. Both men had overcome challenging draw conditions. Filler beat Gerson Martinez of Peru to reach the final round. Van Boening was facing Fedor Gorst from Russia. Filler won the second phase match by as much as four games.
Van Boening was the top 64-player seed. He had spent many hours in Qatar perfecting his break shot. He used this to easily beat his first four opponents. The combined score was 44-14. He defeated Orcollo in round one, and then beat David Alcaide in round two.
